I Can’t Surprise The Man
December 11, 2007 by Kaydee
I have never been able to surprise my dad with a gift. He has always been able to figure out what he is getting. He has the remarkable ability to hold up the wrapped gift, give it a little shake, and correctly state what is inside. As a child this was devastating to me. All I wanted to do was surprise the man for once.
One particular Christmas I thought I had him. I told my mom that I wanted to get him a new wallet. It wasn’t any wallet. It was a special wallet that would hold his police badge. I couldn’t just order it from any store. I had to go to a uniform shop and order it. I even specifically told the clerk that I did not want them to send the bill to my dad. It had to go to me because it was a Christmas gift.
On Christmas morning I was in suspense all morning. I couldn’t wait to surprise my dad. When it came time to gather for the gift exchange. With a big smile on my face I handed my dad the small box. With a little shake and a smile he said, “I bet it is a new wallet to hold my badge.” With sadness my smile disappeared.
“How did you know?”
Well it so happens that even though the store did send the bill to me and not my dad, they still send a report of purchase to the police department and it ended up in my dads hands. My mom made him promised not to ruin the surprise, but come Christmas morning my spirits were crushed anyway.

I hate to say it but I am the same way. I am able to just pick up something and guess what it is. I did that when me and Mike were engaged and guessed everyone of my gifts. So now he has this thing that if I even guess it then he will just tell me what it is. I dont try to guess anymore!
All of the kids have presents wrapped under the tree except for Daniel. This is because no matter how I disguise the box or try to muffle anything loose inside, he has correctly guessed what each package contained from the time he could talk. Then he would repeat the “favor” for his brothers and sister. Frustrating!!!
I figure if I’m going to go through the trouble of figuring out what he wants, shopping, paying, hiding, and wrapping the silly things, he has the OBLIGATION and the DUTY to be surprised. That’s not asking too much is it???
